parent child relationships

Parent Child Marriage Dynamic: Toxic to Relationships

Recently Courtney Cox and David Arquette have been in the news announcing their separation. David went on the Howard Stern’s radio show to discuss the demise of his marriage. What came out of the interview is David admitting to taking on the child role in their marriage and Courtney becoming tired of being the mother.

This dynamic is unfortunately very common in marriages and becomes toxic overtime if behavior is not changed. To get a better idea about the dynamic watch some past episodes of “Jon and Kate Plus Eight”. In essence one spouse assumes the parent position while the other spouse assumes the child position. The “parent” partner typically nags, prods, controls, dictates, scolds, and makes most of the decisions. The “parent” can be emasculating at times and cause the “child” partner to harbour resentment. The “child” in turn can be rebellious, immature, passive-aggressive, and irresponsible. I work with many couples every week that portray this dysfunctional pattern.

Intimacy is the first thing to usually go because nobody wants to be intimate with their parent. Nagging and irresponsibility are not sexy traits. Second is communication on a mature intimate level ceases and instead gets replaced with more of a business language. One spouse asks another to do something and then follows up to see if it was done. The one assigned the task usually doesn’t complete the task on purpose and the cycle continues.

Tips:

First acknowledge your perspective roles and agree to change.

Second, the parent partner needs to enlist their partners help in the marriage. It looks like this, instead of assigning a chore discuss a situation with your partner and ask your partner for suggestions and advice on how to handle the issue. Compromise and give the child partner ownership of the task at hand.

Third, the child partner needs to become an active participant in The Relationship and not see themselves as the victim. Take charge of chores/situations and see what response you get from your partner.

25 Things to Do When Grandpa Passes Away, Mom and Dad Get Divorced, or the Dog Dies: Activities to Help Children Suffering Loss or Change

25 Things to Do When Grandpa Passes Away, Mom and Dad Get Divorced, or the Dog Dies: Activities to Help Children Suffering Loss or Change

$13.95

Kids need ways to acknowledge death and loss–and they need to express their sense of grief physically. Some children need activities we consider traditional: they conduct ceremonies or write letters to the people they’ve lost. Others, full of the anger that is a normal stage of grief, need to pound and punch, run and jump. Yet others express their grief through art. This book combines a description of the grieving process with directions for activities that help bereaved children. Kanyer explains the value of each activity so parents and caregivers can select appropriate projects based on the child’s age, loss and stage in the grieving process. She also discusses how learning about grief prepares children for new relationships and to accept losses later in life. Laurie Kanyer is a Yakima, Washington educational consultant who specializes in human development across the lifespan. She is also the parenting columnist for the Yakima Herald-Republic. This book evolved from her research on how people parent when they are suffering a life-threatening illness.

A Boomer’s Guide to Grandparenting

We are your typical boomer nana and papa, say authors Kathryn and Allan Zullo, younger, healthier, wealthier, and better educated than our grandparents. We are more active and less formal than our own parents were at our age. We no longer fit the traditional image of our elderly kin. That description signals the need for a new kind of grandparenting, a role that The Nanas and the Papas fills to perfection. This completely reworked and updated version is now half again as large as the original. Most boomer grandparents work hard and lead vigorous, often stressful, lives where time is a precious commodity, say the Zullos. The Nanas and the Papas helps grandparents relieve the stress of grandparenting and make the most of limited time.Top grandparenting experts cited throughout the book tailor their guidance and recommendations to fit the boomer sensibility, covering topics such as: o How to define the grandparenting role for a new generationo The latest trends in child careo How to work in harmony with your children and their spouseso High-tech grandparentingo Ways to make the most of time alone with grandchildreno Grandparenting and the single-parent householdo Grandparents caring for their own parentsFilled with expert advice, The Nanas and the Papas provides a smooth transition into grandparenting and sets the stage for successful relationships and experiences for the entire family.

A Thing Apart: Love and Reality in the Therapeutic Partnership (Critical Issues in Psychoanalysis; 2)

$76.89

Is this relationship real? is a question therapists often hear from their patients. We know it is real, but certainly different from other relationships. Other authors have described it as an analog of the parent-child relationship. In this ambitiously integrative work, the distinguished analyst and respected teacher, Dr. Irving Steingart, offers a new model of the analytic relationship, one that has no analog in ordinary life. In this model the patient’s psychic reality is of paramount importance. It is a reality that is collaboratively discovered, not merely invented or narratively created. This model offers a way to understand the love that develops between therapist and patient, a love that is not based on transference, but on a love of truth and on an understanding of the patient’s psychic reality. Throughout, Steingart uses clinical material to clarify his ideas. He also makes use of current study in several fields with which psychotherapy has a natural interface in order to demonstrate a congruence. This provides further support for his contention that the experiences of reality and love, as they operate in the treatment relationship, indeed mark it as a thing apart .

A comparison of childless stepmothers and stepmothers with children: The significance of role salience and role strain in marital and psychological well-being.

A comparison of childless stepmothers and stepmothers with children: The significance of role salience and role strain in marital and psychological well-being.

$49.99

Research shows that stepparents experience considerable amounts of stress (e.g., Brady, Bray, & Zeeb, 1986), particularly stepmothers (Booth & Dunn, 1994; Cherlin & Furstenberg, 1994). The current study examined the effects of stepparent stress on stepmothers' mental health, marital satisfaction, and life satisfaction. Childless stepmothers (CSM) were compared to stepmothers with children (SWC) to identify key differences between these groups of stepmothers. No prior studies comparing these groups are known. Results indicated that the 337 stepmothers in this sample are not experiencing clinical levels of mental health difficulties (i.e., anxiety, depression), and they exhibit typical levels of marital satisfaction and life satisfaction. CSMs reported lower marital satisfaction, higher role captivity, higher exclusion from their partners' relationships with the stepchildren than SWCs. SWCs reported higher role ambiguity for the stepmother role than CSMs. Most notably, CSMs reported higher role salience for their occupations, while SWCs reported higher role salience for the role of parent. Among CSMs, the desire to have children was significantly correlated with role salience for the role of parent. This suggests that there may be two subgroups of stepmothers: those who desire to have children, and those who are intentionally child-free. Trends in the data were also noted, with CSMs reporting higher self-esteem and lower life satisfaction than SWCs. These differences between group means on these variables approached but did not achieve statistical significance. The findings indicate that, although CSMs and SWCs indicate the same level of overall stepparent role strain, there are differences between the groups in terms of type of role strain experienced, marital satisfaction, and life role salience.

A longitudinal study of emerging adults' conversations with parents about sex and dating during college.

A longitudinal study of emerging adults’ conversations with parents about sex and dating during college.

$49.99

Emerging adulthood is a time of both sexual and romantic relationship development and change in the parent-child relationship (Arnett, 2004; Lefkowitz, 2005) and parents are an influential source of socialization regarding sexual norms and values (DiIorio, Pluhar, & Belcher, 2003). However, a qualitative analysis of parent-child communication about sex and dating has not yet been conducted to examine changes in conversational topic and quality during the transition from adolescence to emerging adulthood. This study provides a longitudinal analysis of 30 young adults' sexual experiences, attitudes about sexuality and dating, and reported conversations with parents about sexuality and dating from the first and fourth years of college. Quantitative results replicated and extended past research, indicating that sexual and relationship experience increased, attitudes towards dating and sexuality became more gender-stereotyped and permissive, and relationships with parents increased in general closeness. Multi-leveled qualitative analyses revealed important changes in the topics discussed with parents including greater mutuality and less restrictive messages. Analyses also revealed increased openness and comfort from the first to fourth year of college. The results from this study provide a detailed and individualized understanding of the qualitative changes in conversations with parents during college and contribute to our understanding of sexual development during young adulthood in the context of relationships with parents.

A primary care school age Healthy Choices Intervention program.

$49.99

Childhood overweight and obesity have reached epidemic proportions in the United States. Primary care providers could intervene in this escalating health crisis by providing evidence-based interventions to address this chronic health problem, but there has been limited experimental research conducted in primary care settings to guide interventions to improve the physical and psychosocial outcomes of overweight in school age children. Therefore, the primary aim of this study was to pilot test a comprehensive Cognitive Theory-based Healthy Choices Intervention (HCI) program with overweight and obese 9- to 12-year-old children and their parents in order to determine the program’s feasibility and acceptability in a primary care setting. Secondary aims included an evaluation of the psychosocial and anthropometric child and parent outcomes in order to determine the intervention’s preliminary effects. The relationships among the outcomes for participants also were examined.;Overweight and obese children (Sample size = 17; Mean = 10.9 years; Standard Deviation = 0.88 years) identified in primary care, and their parents, participated in this 7-week one-group pretest posttest intervention study. Outcome measures included: weight and body mass index (BMI), BMI percentile, physical activity and nutrition knowledge, beliefs, choices, and behaviors, anxiety and depression and self-concept and social competence. The internal consistency of instruments adapted for this age group of children also was assessed.;Results indicated that participants found the weekly cognitive behavior skills building HCI with its alternating clinic and telephone sessions, to be useful and informative. Significant effects of the HCI for the children included decreased BMI percentile, increased knowledge, beliefs, choices, and behaviors, and self-reported increased physical activity and self-control. Significant preliminary effects of the HCI for the parents included increased knowledge, beliefs, and

Kinship terminologies include the terms of address used in different languages or communities for different relatives and the terms of reference used to identify the relationship of these relatives to ego or to each other. Societies in different parts of the world and using different languages may share the same basic terminology patterns; in such cases, one can very easily translate the kinship terms of one language into another, although connotations may vary. But translators usually find it impossible to translate directly the kinship terms of a society that uses one system into the language of a society that uses a different system. Anthropologist Lewis Henry Morgan (1818-1881) performed the first survey of kinship terminologies in use around the world. Though much of his work is now considered dated, he argued that kinship terminologies reflect different sets of distinctions. For example, most kinship terminologies distinguish between sexes (the difference between a brother and a sister) and between generations (the difference between a child and a parent). Moreover, he argued, kinship terminologies distinguish between relatives by blood and marriage (although recently some anthropologists have

Acculturation and ParentChild Relationships Measurement and Development

Acculturation and ParentChild Relationships Measurement and Development

$80

Although many researchers agree on a general definition of acculturation, the conceptualization and measurement of acculturation remain controversial. To address the issues, the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) sponsored a conference that brought together scholars who work to define and develop assessments of acculturation, and who study the impact of acculturation on families. The goals of the conference were to evaluate both the status of acculturation as a scientific construct and the roles of acculturation in parenting and human development. The goal of this volume is to advance the state-of-the-art.Acculturation and Parent-Child Relationships: Measurement and Development is a must-read for researchers, students, and policymakers concerned with cultural factors that affect the lives of parents and children.

 Activating Participation

Activating Participation

$70.33

This book collects together important research on parents’ and carers’ involvement in the education of their children. The contributors stress the importance of dialog and action between teachers and parents so that parents actively share in making the right decisions about their children’s educational experience. They explore the challenges this presents for both the teachers and the parents in achieving such partnerships. Participatory democracy at grass roots level is hugely complex, especially in diverse society. This book seeks to develop the empirical and theoretical understanding of parent-school relationships and participatory democracy. By researching aspects of this problematic dynamic, it provides approaches for constructive policy and practice. New research into home-school relations, for example, will support teachers in developing their strategies for securing parent participation. Key factors that affect parents’ participation are identified, such as the experiences of mothers, and issues relating to social class and race, and these are taken into account in discussing parents’ role in school. What is feasible, what is appropriate and what is desirable? Activating Participation offers some of the answers. The book is for teachers, policy makers, superintendants and for advisers counselors and practitioners. It is also of important reading for students of teaching, child development, social policy, sociology, and gender studies. The contributors include the editors and Miriam David, Jane Martin, Jane Ribbens McCarthy, Barbara Walker and Maggie Maclure, Anne Phillips, and Heidi Safia Mirza.

Adult children of alcoholics: An exploration of heterogeneity utilizing childhood roles, family of origin health and adult attachment styles.

$49.99

Research reports that an estimated forty-three percent of adults, or seventy-six million people, in the United States have relatives who are alcoholic. In addition, one in eight individuals, or an estimated 30 million adults, has an alcoholic parent. The literature suggests that the impact of growing up in an alcoholic family system may affect psychological functioning well into adulthood. Adult children of alcoholics (ACOAs) are at increased risk for a myriad of psychological symptoms including substance abuse/dependency, problems in interpersonal relationships, depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. However, research has also indicated that there may be more heterogeneity within this group than previously reported. It has been suggested that while patterns of maladjustment and increased risk for psychological distress may be evident, no clear “syndrome” related to this population was supported. This study explored whether an ACOA’s childhood family role (i.e. Hero, Scapegoat, Mascot and Lost Child) explained variance within this population, using adult attachment and family of origin health as outcome measures. Results did not support this hypothesis. This study also examined between group differences in adult attachment styles and family of origin health between a sample of ACOAs and Non-ACOAs. Analysis indicated that ACOAs reported significantly more Fearful attachment styles than Non-ACOAs. As well, post-hoc analyses indicated that ACOAs described their families of origin as promoting significantly less personal responsibility, as well as, having lower support for the expression of emotions and constructive conflict resolution than Non-ACOAs. This study provides information which may be utilized by clinicians working with this population. The impact of less secure attachment styles within the therapeutic relationship should be considered. As well, this study provides evidence that a specific pattern of maladjustment secondary to the dynamics created by the

 Broken Fathers/Broken Sons

This memoir is a story of loss and gain, of alienation and reconciliation, and of how such experiences go into the making of a psychoanalyst. In sharing his own very troubled family history, his decade as a Carmelite monk, his marriage and career as a psychoanalyst, Gargiulo shows how the diverse pieces of one¿s life can fit together into something that is meaningful and real. This is one person¿s life – but it relates to us all. ¿We are bound together, each of us,¿ the author writes, ¿in our living, our troubles and our joys. As we hear another’s story, we are, simultaneously, writing our own autobiography.¿¿Broken Fathers/Broken Sons is a rare combination of memoir and musing. Playful and wise, it is an ode to what is broken inside all of us, as well as to what seeks healing….it allows us to put back together both questions and quests, as we journey out of a decade of looking for a better father in God in a Carmelite monastery, into psychoanalytic practice. Out of one man¿s coming to terms with the damage of a painful father/son relationship, comes a poignant and fierce cry against inequality, be it between parent and child, or analyst and patient.¿Erika Duncan, Novelist Founder of Herstory Writers Workshop¿In this intensely personal and humane memoir Dr. Gargiulo plumbs the depths of relationships between a father and a son. Not since Turgenev¿s ¿Fathers and Sons¿ have these issues been so keenly examined and so directly held up to scrutiny. The precepts of psychoanalytic thought brought forward by Gargiulo speak to everyman in this book that merits a place onone¿s bookshelf next to the work of the great Russian novelist.¿Norman Itzkowitz, Professor Emeritus, Princeton University.

Carnival Glass, Bonnie Dunlop”s new fiction collection, is an examination of the infirmity of human relationships — marriages, brotherhood, friendships, parent-child relations hindered by negligence and death — and how strange providence can send a sane and settled person entirely off the rails. These stories honour how we love and take care of each other, and how, inevitably, we fail each other too.Dunlop”s settings — dusty ranches, near-ghost towns of Southwest Saskatchewan, infinite beaches of Tofino, BC, small prairie cities in the 60s and exotic locales of contemporary Mexico– are built with a quiet grace and familiarity and remain integral to her stories. It is with such detail that the assured writing in Carnival Glass situates award-winning author Bonnie Dunlop as a contending voice for women”s fiction.

 Cellphone

Cellphone

$8.54

A captivating look at the history of mobile communication. Although the Internet takes us everywhere in cyberspace, it usually requires us to be seated behind a desk. In contrast, the cellphone lets us walk through the world, fully connected. Cellphone explores the history of mobility in media–from books to cameras to transistor radios to laptops–and examines the unique impact of a device that sits in a pocket or palm, and lets us converse by voice or text. The impact cuts both ways, and obligates as well as liberates: the device that allows us to call anytime, anywhere allows us to be called anytime, anywhere. Cellphone considers how this new dual edge of accessibility has transformed journalism, restaurants, public transport, automobiles, romance, parent-child relationships, and indeed all walks of life, trivial and profound. Like an organic cell that moves, evolves, combines with other cells, and generates, the cellphone has become a complex sparkplug of human life.

Combining positive behavior support and functional assessment in a parent-training program: An evaluation of effectiveness and outcomes.

$49.99

In recent years, a central focus in the field of prevention and early intervention has been on ways to effectively support young children with challenging behavior and their families. Interventions utilizing Functional Assessment (FA) and Positive behavior support (PBS) are some of the most promising evidence-based practices for this population. These approaches focus on reducing challenging behaviors that can have a negative impact on children while also helping children to develop and engage in socially desirable behaviors (Koegel, Koegel, & Dunlap, 1996).;Research documenting the utility and applicability of PBS with preschool-aged populations remain scarce, particularly within natural environments (e.g., Blair, Umbreit, & Eck, 2000). Several gaps in the research remain, including using parents as intervention agents and implementing the intervention in natural settings (i.e., the home). Positive Beginnings (Hanline, Wetherby, Woods, Fox & Lentini, 2004) is a training program that may prove successful at addressing these gaps. Within the program, knowledge and skills in four areas are emphasized: (a) early communication and social development; (b) the process of functional assessment; (c) the communicative message of challenging behavior; and, (d) elements of a positive behavior support plan.;The purpose of this study was to in evaluate change in both parent and child outcomes following parents’ participation in the 4-week Positive Beginnings program. Participants included nine parent-child dyads that were randomly assigned to one of three baseline conditions. Results indicated some decreases in challenging behavior throughout the intervention phase, despite the fact that clear functional relationships between the intervention and behavior were not attained. No evidence exists, however, indicating that participants appropriately modified their responding to their children’s challenging behavior. Covenant and Commitments: Faith, Family and Economic Life

$30

No idea shaped modern convictions about the moral structure of love, family life, and the role of the household in civil society more than the biblical idea of covenant. Yet these patterns are challenged today by socio-economic developments that alter the role of the family in civil society.Ethicist Max Stackhouse offers a fresh vision of how the family may best reconstitute the household. He challenges libertarian and liberationist arguments based on economic ideologies and sociobiological theories that distort the nature and character of love, sexuality, and commitment. Recognizing the inadequacy of current family values rhetoric, he seeks to recover a covenantal ethic for the family that accounts for new male-female, parent-child, production-consumption, and household-workplace relationships.

A parent’s aging and mortality elicits strong feelings of loss, and a stark realization of one’s own aging and mortality. Past, present, and future paths converge, and the caretaker is at the center of that crossroads. Psychologist Praver—a specialist working with such caretakers—shows us their inner worlds and how they used a difficult point in their lives to embark on a journey of self-understanding and self-transformation—a journey toward a more meaningful life for themselves.Readers can gain a better understanding of their own lives— and know they are not alone in their struggles to contend with and find powerful benefits from the emotional side of caring for an aging parent. Distress can become peace of mind, as we see in the stories of men and women who sought Praver’s help. Relationships that might be weakened by a caretaker role—relationships between caretakers and their children, spouses, and friends—can actually grow stronger with the experience. Profound issues affecting caretakers are shared in this evocative book, which is an enlightening and enjoyable read.

Early socioemotional development, in general, and self-regulation, in particular, develops in the context of early parenting relationships. This suggests there are important implications for young children's development when the boundaries circumscribing the parent-child relationship become ambiguous through parental psychological or physical absence. Boundary ambiguity, a theory which describes the basis for individual dysfunction in the context of diffuse family boundaries and is based on general systems theory, may be especially applicable to the study of early toddler emotion regulation. The two primary types of boundary ambiguity are defined as (a) parental psychological absence with physical presence or (b) parental psychological presence with physical absence. However, boundary ambiguity has not been applied, to date, in studies focusing on the relationships between very young children and their parents. The purposes of this study were to: (1) define the construct of psychological absence with physical presence in the early parent-child relationships, (2) explore the impact of psychological absence on the development of children's early self-regulation between 14 and 36 months of age, and (3) explore the impact of psychological presence with physical absence on toddlers' (14-36 months of age) regulatory outcomes. Results supported a proximal method for measuring psychological absence using a latent construct and further demonstrated that mothers' psychological absence significantly predicted children's emotion regulation related behaviors across toddlerhood; these results were consistent across racial/ethnic groups and did not differ for boys as compared to girls. Additionally, results demonstrated that fathers' consistent physical presence significantly predicted toddlers' emotion regulation related behaviors across toddlerhood; these results are discussed within the framework of boundary ambiguity, suggesting that

 Families as Relationships

Families as Relationships

$81.95

The field of family studies has recently seen the development of a more specialized focus on the character of particular relationships. The nature of these relationships may take many forms but typically involves individuals who view themselves as a unit with a long-term commitment to continue their relationship. Traditionally, at least in western societies, families are defined in terms of two parents living together with responsibility for rearing their children. However, these so-called nuclear families are becoming a rarer phenomenon. Single-parent families, childless couples, lesbian or gay male couples are also all represented in the broad mix of relations referred to as families. Each of the chapters in this book deals with a primary relationship issue. These include: issues of early marriagehow young relationships become enduring relationshipsparent and child relationsconflict between partnersthe interface between work and family lifemarital quality and maintenancedivorce and its impact on the familyaging and older familiesThis volume provides a useful reference for professionals whose research and/or clinical practice focuses on family relationship issues. This book is also intended for advanced students in the areas of sociology, close relationships and family sciences. Families as Relationships is one of a series of paperbacks dedicated to the study and application of processes by which individuals relate to each other in social and family settings. Each book provides an expanded and up-to-date version of a section in the original Handbook of Personal Relationships (second edition) edited by Steve Duck.

Relying on a decade-long participant observation study, this book focuses on the salience of parent-child relationships for home schooling. Those experiences with traditional schools emerge as a major motive for home schooling. The quality of the relationships that develop between parents and children are the major predictor of a successful home schooling experience. Comparing the socialization between traditional schooling and home schools, Family Ties: Relationships, Socialization and Home Schooling investigates significant controversies in these two separate environments. Professor Gary Wyatt is able to represent a parent with both experiences and contends to dispel the typical home schooling critiques. The efforts of home schooling parents to negotiate favorable identities with others and the techniques used to manage the anxiety associated with this unconventional lifestyle are explored.

They illustrate how these different types of abuse stem from problematic communication patterns integral to the power imbalance inherent in abusive relationships. The contributors also suggest ways of modifying these patterns.

Family and Society in American History

The internal dynamics of families have altered dramatically as the family has gradually shifted from a unit of economic production to a collection of individuals in pursuit of different goals. Taking examples from the eighteenth through the twentieth centuries, this eclectic reader illuminates changes in the American family and presents some of the methods and approaches used to study families.Linking family patterns with changing social circumstances, Family and Society in American History considers husband-wife and parent-child relationships in light of language usage, gender roles, legal structures, and other contexts. For example, new legal attitudes toward divorce emerged as marriage came to be seen as a site for individual satisfaction. Marital fertility declined as pregnancy and childbirth came to be seen as medical rather than family issues. In the twentieth century, a new domestic role for men — Mr. Do-It-Yourself — developed in the wake of suburbanization.Contributors also consider the experiences of ethnic and immigrant families. Among other case studies, they show how Chinese immigrant women targeted for rescue by Presbyterian mission workers took advantage of the gap between Chinese and American culture to increase their leverage in family and marital relationships.A diverse compendium of family life, Family and Society in American History provides an intriguing commentary on the permeability of social structures and interpersonal behavior.

Growing Up With a Schizophrenic Mother

Growing Up With a Schizophrenic Mother

$36.94

An estimated two to three million people in the United States today were raised by a schizophrenic parent. Brown and Roberts offer a unique book based on interviews with over forty adult children of mothers diagnosed as schizophrenic. Such topics as the isolation their family felt, their chaotic home environments, their present relationships with their mothers, and the lost potential of mother and child are covered. Their stories are fascinating and provide important information to both the mental health community and the lay public. The offspring have been described as having higher rates of increased aggressivity and sibling conflict, but often their circumstances strengthened these children and contributed to artistic and creative talents, resiliency, and high achievements. The authors provide an overview of schizophrenia, behaviors of the affected parent, and the marital relationship of the patient and her non-schizophrenic spouse. As adults, the respondents now share their grievances about the psychological community–what they needed and did not get. Brown and Roberts then present suggestions for treatment of affected children aimed at psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, counselors, and health care providers.

Incestuous and Close-Kin Marriage in Ancient Egypt and Persia

Incestuous and Close-Kin Marriage in Ancient Egypt and Persia

$61

For both ancient Egypt and Iran, as a cultural feature, incestuous relationships are usually dismissed on the grounds that they are only found as the exception, being allowed for royalty as representatives for the divine on earth, or that the evidence for such relationships are unreliable. Neither view, from the perspective of this study, is tenable. This work examines the evidence for marriage and sexual relations between siblings, and between a parent and child, in ancient Egypt and pre-Islamic Iran. The book restricts its examination to incestuous relationships between members of non-royal nuclear families and puts forth arguments against the generally held axiom that the prohibition of incest is a universal phenomenon.

It was once assumed that the bedrock concepts of psychology held true for all the world’s peoples. More recently, post-modern approaches to research have expanded on these Western models, building a psychology that takes into account the sociopolitical, historical, religious, ecological, and other indigenous factors that make every culture, as well as every person as agents of their own actions.Indigenous and Cultural Psychology surveys psychological and behavioral phenomena in native context in various developing and developed countries, with particular focus on Asia. An international team of 28 experts clarifies culture-specific concepts (such as paternalism and the Japanese concept of amae), models integrative methods of study, and dispels typical misconceptions about the field and its goals. The results reflect culturally sound frames of reference while remaining rigorous, systematic, and verifiable. Interparental conflict and adolescent physiological functioning, health, and adjustment.

Interparental conflict and adolescent physiological functioning, health, and adjustment.

$49.99

The goal of this dissertation was to explore theoretically suggested but previously untested links among parental marital conflict and offspring physiological functioning, adjustment, and physical health. These associations were examined in late adolescence, a developmental period neglected in the relevant literatures. Specifically, this dissertation examined whether marital conflict is associated with dysregulated physiological stress responses to both conflict- and non-conflict-specific stressors, as well as whether marital conflict is associated with greater mental and physical health problems. Additionally tested was whether adolescent conflict appraisals, parent-adolescent relationships, and physiological functioning mediate or moderate the association between marital conflict and adolescent outcomes, and whether these associations vary based on parent and adolescent gender. To achieve these goals, a multi-method, follow-up study was conducted involving families (n = 42) who previously participated in the NICHD Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development. Parent and adolescent report, observer ratings of marital conflict, adolescent participation in two stressors, and assessment of cortisol and cardiovascular functioning were included.;Results suggest that marital conflict is associated with dysregulated adolescent stress responses and support the habituation hypothesis that marital conflict is associated with dampened physiological stress responses. There was only limited evidence that marital conflict was associated with physical and mental health. In addition, results consistently indicated that conflict appraisals, parent-adolescent relationships, and physiological functioning operated as moderators of the association between marital conflict and adolescent outcomes rather than mediators. There was evidence that conflict appraisals and parent-adolescent relationship quality may buffer the negative effects of marital conflict on adolescents, but also

 Intricacies Of Manhood

Intricacies Of Manhood

$11.95

My ultimate goal when creating “Intricacies of Manhood”, was to try and help preserve the family structure, by offering some insight on some of the most important variables necessary to maintain relationships. There are so many single parent families now a days that it is almost frightening. The family structure has diminished to a dream, in comparison to what was once an entity. Many single mothers, are doing a good job raising children, but they can only offer certain elements of the family structure. It is priceless for a child to be able witness the interaction between his mother and father daily around the house. The way a man respects his woman and vise versa. Or, even when respect isn’t present in the household, it can be as a guide to what is necessary to show respect. There are many single mothers today that are raising there young boys graciously and stern. Showing all that is needed to make it in society, but they have to learn about being a man using bits and pieces of the men that come in and out of their lives, from experiences in their lives, or mentors whom they see on a regular basis. The trouble with that is, they spend most of their time at home with their mom. Now its great to want to be like your mom, because she is hard working, respectable and strong, but its a whole other thing to want to be your mom!Society, as a whole, here in America, is a beautiful place. Full of all of our hopes and dreams, full of are wants and desires and they are all but just a finger tip away from us. We can obtain all of the financial gain we desire if we just work hard. We are taught from an early age to achieve, achieve, achieve and obtain the things that we desire, so that we can become independent. All of this sounds wonderful! Its like a dream or something from a fairytale. I sometimes wonder, is our dream constructive to our inner being, or is it a curse to our morality as people. Some of us have become so independent, that we are consumed by

Jewish Ethics for the Twenty-First Century

Jewish Ethics for the Twenty-First Century

$53.31

In this highly provocative and informed work, Byron L. Sherwin, one of the leading Jewish ethicists of our time, demonstrates how the wisdom of the past — found in classical texts that form Jewish religious tradition — can forcefully address the moral perplexities of the present. In setting out a contemporary agenda for Jewish ethics, Sherwin debunks common misconceptions about Jewish ethics and distinguishes between the ethics of Judaism and various forms of secular and religious ethics. He shows, for example, how the ethics of Judaism and the ethics of Jews often are at odds, how the Judeo-Christian ethic is an obsolete myth, and how Jewish and Christian ethics radically differ both in terms of their theological assumptions and in their applied methodologies.Sherwin delineates a methodology for Jewish ethics, which he applies to a wide variety of issues such as health and healing, euthanasia, reproductive biotechnology, cloning, parent-child relationships, economic justice, repentance or moral rehabilitation, and the relationship between humans and machines.Drawing on a wide range of biblical, rabbinical, Jewish philosophical and kabbalistic sources, Jewish Ethics for the Twenty-First Century links the biblical term image of God to moral freedom, human creativity and the challenge of becoming God’s partner in creation and a coauthor of the Torah.

Life As We Know It: A Collection of Personal Essays from Salon.com

Life As We Know It: A Collection of Personal Essays from Salon.com

$11.99

“…these essays are jewels of the unexpected, and in introducing them, I don’t want to steal any of their surprise. Suffice it to say that family life…is alive and well, but it is not like anything you ever read about before in your life.” — Jane Smiley, from the foreword The nuclear family peaked in 1960 with 45 percent of the American population. Many decades later, the tidy ensemble is rare. Relationships, baby making, sex, dating, divorce — they aren’t what they used to be. But the mainstream media keeps the reality of American life a secret, only leaking the occasional tidbit to remind us that those in “unconventional” configurations are a sad anomaly to be pitied or ignored. Life As We Know It offers proof in its most engaging form — the personal essay — that the big guys have got it wrong. This collection of blunt, lyrical, and often very funny work from award-winning Salon.com tells the true stories about how we live — of hustling fertility drugs, losing a child, hating dad, and coming to terms with a parent who was the voice of “Frosty the Snowman” on TV. First-time writers and critically acclaimed authors like Amy Bloom, Kathryn Harrison, Susan Straight, and Benjamin Cheever, plumb the familiar to deliver portraits of moments, seasons, and eras that we recognize or long to understand.

 Maintaining LongDistance and CrossResidential Relationships

Maintaining LongDistance and CrossResidential Relationships

$65.29

This thought-provoking volume offers an innovative and intriguing approach to the study of long-distance relationships. Author Laura Stafford examines romantic long-distance relationships and then expands the conception of long-distance relationships to include other relational types. She summarizes literature across the social sciences on various types of long-distance relationships and extracts themes and patterns across the relational types. In so doing, she reconsiders approaches to and offers an expanded vision of relational maintenance.By expanding her scope beyond romantic relationships, Stafford includes those that span residences and relational types, such as noncustodial parent-child and geographically and residentially separated adult children and parents. She contends that face-to-face interaction is not necessary to maintain healthy relationships, and questions the assumption that maintaining, rather than terminating, a particular relationship is always best for the involved parties. With its interdisciplinary approach to challenging commonly held assumptions about communication and close relationships, Maintaining Long-Distance and Cross-Residential Relationships will be engaging reading for scholars in communication, psychology, sociology, mass communication, and family studies. It is also appropriate for special topics graduate courses on long-distance relationships and human communication, and will serve as a unique supplemental text for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students in interpersonal, relational, and family communication and family studies.

Money and the People You Love: A New Approach to Financial Planning Based on What Matters to You Most

Money and the People You Love: A New Approach to Financial Planning Based on What Matters to You Most

$16.95

As a financial adviser, one of the simple truths Bruce Helmer has learned is that relationships are the single greatest influence on how people use their money and plan for the future. When people talk about their hopes and dreams, they talk about the people they love. Their future, the life they wish to live, is always full of the people most important to them. They don?t talk first about dollars and cents, Dow Jones averages, or bond yields. They talk about a spouse, a parent, a child. When imagining their financial futures, even those without family often focus on others, such as employees, friends, faith communities, and charities. In Money and the People You Love Helmer outlines a new way to approach financial planning based on this important and nearly universal principle.

 Mordecai: An Early American Family

Mordecai: An Early American Family

$27

An Intimate Portrait of a Jewish American Family in America’s First Century Mordecai is a brilliant multigenerational history at the forefront of a new way of exploring our past, one that follows the course of national events through the relationships that speak most immediately to us-between parent and child, sibling and sibling, husband and wife. In Emily Bingham’s sure hands, this family of southern Jews becomes a remarkable window on the struggles all Americans were engaged in during the early years of the republic.Following Washington’s victory at Yorktown, Jacob and Judy Mordecai settled in North Carolina. Here began a three generational effort to match ambitions to accomplishments. Against the national backdrop of the Great Awakenings, Nat Turner’s revolt, the free-love experiments of the 1840s, and the devastation of the Civil War, we witness the efforts of each generation’s members to define themselves as Jews, patriots, southerners, and most fundamentally, middle-class Americans. As with the nation’s, their successes are often partial and painfully realized, cause for forging and rending the ties that bind child to parent, sister to brother, husband to wife. And through it all, the Mordecais wrote-letters, diaries, newspaper articles, books. Out of these rich archives, Bingham re-creates one family’s first century in the United States and gives this nation’s early history a uniquely personal face.

 Mothering Through Domestic Violence

Mothering Through Domestic Violence

$36.95

Research into children and domestic violence in recent years has emphasized the importance of giving positive support to a non-abusive parent for effective child protection. But what exactly does positive support involve? Based on findings from six primary research studies carried out by the authors themselves, as well as other published research, this book reveals how undermining mothering ? specifically, family courts and social work agencies blaming mothers for their own victimization ? plays a key role in locking women into abusive relationships and exacerbating the damage done by domestic violence. It explores the principle message drawn from the research: that the needs of individual victims should inform risk assessment and safety planning by welfare practitioners. Case studies are used to explore key issues that should be considered during assessment and planning, such as the psychological impact on children of living in an abusive household.

As they traveled back and forth from California to Greece, they discovered that for a parent and child, growing up means growing apart. This story is not only about a godmother and goddaughter. It’s about families, friends and teachers who helped Katerina build a home away from home. It’s about living on Greek islands, traveling in Europe and Asia, and launching a career after college. It’s about risk-taking and comfort-giving, openness and privacy. Most of all, it’s about mothers and daughters finding their way to an honest and loving relationship.

Parenting an Adult with Disabilities or Special Needs: Everything You Need to Know to Plan for and Protect Your Child’s Future

$17.95

Letting your child leave the nest is never easy. If you’re the parent of a child with disabilities or special needs, letting go is even harder. You worry about whether he will be able to make it on his own, and most important, get the help he needs if something goes wrong. How will she perform in her first job? Will she be able to make friends? Many parents are tempted to keep their children at home, believing the children will be safer and happier under their care. But adults with special needs deserve the same chance at a happy life as everyone else. As the mother of an adult child with disabilities, Peggy Lou Morgan has years of experience dealing with the challenges you face every day. She believes the most loving thing parents can do is to prepare their children to leave home in a way that works best for them. In Parenting an Adult with Disabilities or Special Needs, she gives you invaluable advice on: —    teaching your adult child to be a self-advocate —    helping your child cope with relationships —    helping your child find a good vocational program —    finding an apartment and a roommate —    understanding government programs that can help children while they become more independent Compassionate and thorough, this guide will help you make sure that your children leave home with confidence and joy. “Peggy Lou Morgan has tackled that big question—‘Who will love my child after I am gone?’ She sends a dart through the belief that parents can or should rely on the service system to look after their child. While professionals can be helpful, she reminds us of the critical importance of helping our children to connect with family and the larger community.” —    David Pitonyak, Ph.D., founder, Imagine, www.dimagine.com

Puerto Rican kindergarteners’ representation of the self within family relationships: Are they related to their self-worth, child-mother relationship and behavioral adjustment?

$49.99

This dissertation is based on children’s narratives in response to the Attachment Story Completion Task (ASCT; Bretherton and Ridgeway, 1990), conceptualized as an expression of their sense of self-worth in the context of family relationships and coded with the Overall Meaning Segment Based system (OMSB; Gullon-Rivera and Bretherton, 2005). The current study aims to provide additional validation for this coding system by testing three hypotheses grounded in assumptions from attachment theory by: (1) comparing the quality of Puerto Rican children’s self-representations as reflected in their ASCT narratives to their responses of self-worth as expressed in answers to both indirect and direct questions about the self; (2) examining links between children’s ASCT self-representation and their mothers’ perception of the parent-child relationship; and (3) examining whether ASCT self-representations predict children’s socioemotional behavioral adjustment as rated by teachers and mothers. One hundred and five children (51 girls and 54 boys) from 11 kindergarten classrooms located in Lares, Puerto Rico participated in this study. Children were interviewed at their school to assess their sense of self-worth. Parents and teachers evaluated children’s socio-emotional behavioral adjustment. Correlational analyses provided highly significant support for the convergent validity of the ASCT (coded with the OSMB system) as an assessment of young children’s perception of self-worth. Also, the highly significant correlations between maternal ratings of the child’s behavior toward her/his mother and the ASCT self-representation scores were consistent with Bowlby’s (1988) assumption that children’s internal working model of the self reflects the quality of their attachment relationship with the primary caregiver. Furthermore, regression analyses provided strong support for the predictive validity of the ASCT Self-Representation derived from the OSMB coding system. The results of this
